Project Description
I created a 15-second stop-motion ID for NBCUniversal’s SyFy Channel using handcrafted paper cutouts inspired by Lotte Reiniger’s silhouette animation style. The piece celebrates the imaginative world of science fiction, fantasy, and horror through expressive character movement and detailed lighting that mimics a candle-lit, shadow puppet aesthetic. The animation builds a sense of mystery and wonder, ending with the SyFy logo revealed clearly for three seconds.
Process
Research & Planning
In this project, we already had the constraint of assets we needed used as well as a specific brand style we needed to keep true to. This allowed us to skip the design stage and move straight to the storyboard stage.
Animatic
Once we got our storyboards approved by the teacher, we were able to move onto the next stage, taking those storyboards and using them to block out timing for the next stage
Animation And Revision
Finally, once we had our timing down, it was time to animate. Taking the paper puppets and moving them to create stop motion animation over a light box.
Results
Finally, it was time to take our animations and fix up any lighting issues and replace the background in After effects to give it that final, polished look.
